Salt is made up of sodium, chloride and other minerals.
Too many people eat too much salt. A high sodium diet can lead to high blood pressure, a major cause of heart disease and stroke.
Watch out what you eat. It is not just table salt and sauces added to food, processed food like fishballs and noodles also to be watched.
Urine samples from 800 people aged 18 to 79 showed that the average daily salt intake was 8.3g. This is more than 60% above the recommended 5g a day which is equivalent to a teaspoon of salt.
Babies under age of one should have less than 1g of salt per day. And children aged between 1 and 6 should have less than 2.5g.
High salts diet affects the natural sodium balance in the body. While healthy kidneys are able to excrete excess salt through urine, they cannot keep up with a high salt intake, which ends up in the bloodstream. When there is too much salt in blood, the salt draws more water into the blood and causes blood volume to expand. This exerts more pressure on the blood vessel walls, which then raises blood pressure.
A person with high blood pressure has no visible symptoms but is at increased risk of stroke, heart attack and kidney failure.
** take more fresh fruits and veges, as they are low in salt and contain potassium, which lowers blood pressure.
** avoid canned, smoked, fried and preserved food such as ham and cheese; use herbs and spices for cooking.
** when eating out, should ask for less sauce and gravy and not drink all the soup.
