Science has shown that music can reduce stress hormone levels and lower the heart rate and blood pressure, among other things.
Music can alleviate anxiety, depression, trauma and fears, and ease pain. But the definition of soothing music varies from person to person. To some people, plain silence is music to their ears.
Pregnant woman who love classical music may find listening to Mozart relaxing. But for those who dislike classical music, forcing themselves to do so because it is supposedly good for baby may add unconscious stress to themselves and their baby.
For last 25 years, music has been used as therapy for conditions such as autism and chronic pain. In recent years, music therapists at SGH have started a programme for companies to teach their employees to use music to cope with work stress or to enhance staff bonding.
Music therapy uses songs and other musical experiences to help people cultivate a positive attitude which may eventually benefit their health. But it is not a cure.
