Knowledge about cholesterol

New study has found that close to half the population here has high cholesterol, which puts someone at risk of heart disease and stroke. But what is more worrying is that most of us did not know we had high cholesterol.

The different cholesterol levels have a range of values.

For total cholesterol, a level of less than 200mg/dL is best and 200mg/dL to 239mg/dL is considered borderline high

Have a level of 240mg/dL or more means the person is at increased risk of heart disease.

People with a higher risk of heart disease (and those already has) should ideally have level of LDL cholesterol below 100mg/dL.

For people with normal risk, 100mg/dL to 129mg/dL is near optimal and 130mg/dL to 159mg/dL is borderline high.

Having a level of 160mg/dL or more means the person is increasedrisk of heart disease.

For HDL cholesterol, a person who has a level of less than 40mg/dL is increased of risk of heart disease.

Medication (Statins)  is the essential third leg of a three-pronged approach - diet, exercise and drugs - which is necessary for people whose cholesterol levels cannot be adequately controlled by lifestyle modification alone.
